Alliance Française de Minneapolis/St. Paul
2008-2009 CinéKids Film Series

The Alliance Française’s monthly children’s film series features outstanding works of French animation and world cinema to entertain children and adults alike. Films are shown in French, without subtitles, at the Alliance Française, 113 North First Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401. Free; however, donations are welcome to cover the cost of refreshments.

September 14, 3 pm  Le Petit Poucet (2001), 90 min.  The classic tale of Tom Thumb, after the tale by Chrarles Perrault, is brought to life by director Olivier Dahan.  This science-fictional children’s film, with ogres, monsters, and a dark forest and featuring familiar French actors such as Catherine Deneuve and Sami Naceri, is best suited for children ages 6 and up. 

October 12, 3 pm  U (2006), 90 min. A unicorn named U befriends Princess Mona, soon they meet the Wéwés, a zany musical family.  Written and directed by the French children’s author, Grégoire Solotareff, and Serge Elissade, this animated feature is considered one of the greatest artistic successes in recent years.  For children ages 3 and older

 

November 9, 3 pm Astérix et Obélix: Mission Cléopatre (2006), 107 min. Rated PG Directed by Alain Chabat, starring Gérard Depardieu, Christian Clavier, Jamel Debbouze, and Monica Bellucci. Astérix and Obélix go to Egypt to help architect Numérobis build a palace for Cleopatre using the fantastic potion that gives supernatural strength. Action and comedy make this film enjoyable for adults and children alike.

 

December 14, 3 pm  Princes et Princesses (2000), 70 min. Michel Ocelot, creator of Kirikou, brings us Six short, beautifully animated, stories. Traditional fairy tales with princes, princesses, monsters and witches. Each story different, but in the same spirit.

 

January 11, 3 pm  Peau d’Ane (1970), 90 min.  A true fairy-tale, filmed at the Château de Chambord and starring a young Catherine Deneuve as the princess, a fairy godmother helps a princess disguise herself so she won't have to marry a man she doesn't love.

 

February 8, 3 pm  Les Nouvelles Aventures de Lucky Luke (2004), 90 min.

Lucky Luke, drawing a gun faster than his shadow, fights crime and injustice. He rides Jolly Jumper, "the smartest horse in the world," accompanied by Rantanplan, "the stupidest dog in the universe."  Luky Luke first appeared in French and Belgian comic books in 1946 and continues to be a favorite character today.

 

March 8, 3 pm    Kirikou et la Sorcière (1998), 70 min. This is a well-known animated film is based on an African folk tale where a newborn boy saves his village by ridding the world of Karaba, the evil sorceress.  Created by Michel Ocelot, the lush colors and vivid animation make it a must-see.

 

April 19, 3 pm  Film to be Announced
