Alliance Française Expands Programming to Rochester

In what may well become an extended presence in Rochester, the Alliance Française of Minneapolis/St. Paul is launching a series of French films in Rochester Public Library in May. This marks the beginning of the Rochester Ciné Club, named after the long-time film program at the Alliance headquarters in the North Loop of Minneapolis. Talks are underway to bring Alliance Française language classes to Rochester as well.

“We’ve always had people from Rochester coming to Minneapolis for our classes or events,” said executive director of the Alliance Française of Minneapolis/St. Paul Christina Selander Bouzouina, “but now it appears we have reached a tipping point, where there are enough French enthusiasts to sustain programs there.”

Selander Bouzouina has traveled to Rochester to meet with interested parties and to form partnerships to host the classes and events. The first partner is the Rochester Public Library, which will host the Rochester Ciné Club on the third Wednesdays in May, July and September. May’s film will be Amitiés Sincères (True Friends), followed by Jour de Fête (Holiday) in July and L’Enfer (Hell) in September. The films are free and will be shown in French with English subtitles. An after-work French conversation group will also convene at the Rochester Public Library, with the first gathering on June 17 from 6 to 8 pm in Conference Room B.

On the first Saturday of every month from 9:30 to 11:30 am, French breakfast will be served up fresh. Le P’tit dèj will be held in the Community Room at the People’s Food Cooperative, with the first meeting on June 6.
