Chef Anne to teach bread baking exclusively at the Alliance

Learning to make homemade bread is a trend which is on the rise in the US. For the first time in its history, Alliance Française Mpls/St Paul is thrilled to offer a unique three-part bread baking workshop this spring. The class will be led by Chef Anne Dargent-Wallace, an expert on naturally-leavened breads and ancient grains.

After completing degrees in teaching French as a second language and in second language acquisition, Anne turned to her other passion; cooking and baking. She trained at l’Institut Paul Bocuse in France and then put her knowledge into practice by working in the kitchen of Spoon and Stable, specifically focusing on preparing bread and pasta.

In this lively, participatory class, students will experience the satisfaction of making their own bread from scratch over the course of three unique classes in the series while they practice some French. “Who else provides the perfect combination of French language-teaching experience and culinary know-how to learn this skill with our organization!” said Alix Lewis-Sadrant, Education Director.

During this spring session, Chef Anne will be bring her culinary flair to new heights by combining ancient cereal grains to create uncommon yet delicious breads. “You don’t have to be a highly trained baker to make a good loaf of artisan bread. You just need some quality flour, a few inexpensive baking utensils, and a little instruction and you will be on your way to baking your own healthy bread,” added Chef Anne Dargent-Wallace. She recently impressed AFMSP staff with samples of her bread and explanations of her use of lesser-used flours to make them.

Waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread is one of life’s greatest pleasures not to be missed by any of us. By taking this workshop, AFMSP members can experience this pleasure because they will leave the class with their own dough to bake at home and impress their friends and families. The workshop takes place on three Saturday afternoons in April and May.
