Afoutayi’s Story

The Afoutayi Dance, Music and Arts Company was founded in 2009 by Djenane Saint Juste. As a native of Haiti, Saint Juste immediately noticed the lack of Haitian culture and art in San Francisco, so she decided to do something about it.  She created the company to fill that cultural void. Her mission was to promote Haitian heritage through cultural expression via music, art, dance and history.

Through her experiences as a seasoned choreographer, dancer, actress and vocalist specializing in Haitian traditional dance and folklore, Saint Juste built a community and eventually a festival. First formed in 2010, the Afoutayi Festival takes themes, activities and the arts to bring Haiti to the people. The annual festival is intentionally held near the anniversary of the Battle of Vertières: a battle which defined the 1803 Haitian War of Liberation.

Afoutayi is a family collaboration with Saint Juste’s mother, Florencia Pierre, and brother, Jeff Pierre. Together, they bring artists across disciplines from Haiti and the United States to participate in the annual festival celebration, along with other classes, performances and community-based events throughout the year.
