Come to the Alliance to hear the incredible story of Louise Dillery, a Parisian-born, Jewish woman who survived France under Nazi occupation. This event will take place on Tuesday, May 8th from 6 – 8 pm.

Louise witnessed the descent of Paris into Nazi rule. She felt the rules tighten around herself, her father and other members of the Jewish community. She experienced the imposition of curfews and mandatory yellow stars. One of her most striking memories was standing before the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) hand in hand with her father, as the French tricolore flag was lowered and replaced by the Nazi swastika.

The Dillery family

Louise’s parents both emigrated to France to escape persecution in Poland. Her father feared forced inscription into the Russian army as a young, Jewish man. Louise’s mother left Poland after her father was beaten to death in a pogrom targeting Jews.

Despite their search for refuge, Paris became an inhospitable place for a Jewish family. Louise’s mother died of medical complications when she was 13. This left her father to fend for their family on Île Saint-Louis. They managed through rationing as well as extreme travel and education restrictions on Jews. Eventually, Louise’s father was taken from their home in November 1942 by two men in plainclothes, never to be seen again by Louise.

“Angels in human form”

While she survived tragedy, Louise maintains the importance of good people in dark times. She feels she was saved by “angels in human form,” from friends, the sympathetic principal at her lycée, as well as the American soldiers who arrived to liberate the city, among others.

Though she witnessed classmates disappear, only to learn of their fates at the hands of the gestapo, she remained resourceful and above all hopeful.

Help us welcome this sincere speaker whose life is living history!
