Images of May 68: Protest, Change, and Memory

Mass protest overtook France in May and June of 1968. Those events were sparked by a student rebellion that originated in Paris, but quickly spread across the nation. Factory and office workers alike took to the streets to build France’s largest social movement of the 20th century.

May 1968 remains an important date in the history of contemporary France. Images of that iconic month include poetic slogans, political meetings at the Sorbonne, burning cars and a country on strike… How do we look back, fifty years later, at some of the most famous images, speeches, and changes in French society?

On May 31, we ask ourselves what remains of the legacy of May ’68 in France today, politically and culturally? Protest and strikes continue to be crucial parts of French daily life. Join the Alliance Française as we welcome Joëlle Vitiello, professor of French and francophone studies at Macalester College, for a presentation on the historic movement that rocked France in 1968 and how it influences France today.

Reflecting on political unrest and protest

Through images and film, Vitiello will explore the impact of the events of May 1968 on present day France. Come to the Alliance on May 31 to hear her presentation on the protests that led many political leaders to fear civil war or revolution. Together, we’ll reflect on the artistic movement, imaginative graffiti and slogans spurred by May 1968 in France.

Vitiello co-edited a book and journal volume on women writers from France and francophone regions. Her published works include articles and essays on French, Haitian, Caribbean, and African writers and filmmakers. She teaches courses on topics including contemporary francophone cultures and literature, film and immigration.

Entry is $5 for members, $10 for general public. Refreshments will be served.

RSVP here or by calling the Alliance at 612 332 0436.
