Le club est ouvert à tous !

Practice your reading skills and comprehension with our intermediate French book club: Les Navigateurs de la Littérature. This group meets the second Wednesday of every month from 7pm – 8pm. Each meeting focuses on a different book, so both returning readers and newcomers are invited to attend. During meetings, we discuss the plot of the book, review what we did and did not like, and explore any questions that members may have. Everyone also selects a favorite excerpt to read aloud and to bring to the conversation. The discussion will be in French!

Look for our flyer at the Alliance with upcoming dates and books. This event is free and open to the public! You do not need to be an AF member to participate in our book clubs.

This month’s selection is: En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule de Édouard Louis

This book narrates the childhood and adolescence of the author in a village of Picardy. Rejected by his peers and his family for his effeminate manners, Eddy regularly suffers humiliations and physical violence. These experiences are painted into a world where misery and alcoholism grease the wheels of a social structure where the women abandon their studies to work as cashiers and the men enter factories as soon as they finish school. Eddy eventually acknowledges his own homosexuality and rejects the community that refuses to accept him. By doing this, he discovers a whole new social group with its own set of rules.

Purchase En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule here, or, if you are an AF member, access the book for free on Culturethèque.
