Press Release: Bastille Day 2018 – French festivities in St Paul

Bastille Day 2018

What is Bastille Day?

Each year on July 14, France commemorates the 1789 storming of the Bastille fortress, which was the turning point of the French revolution. Much like Independence Day in the United States, the French celebrate with all things that symbolize France: the tricolor flag, the national anthem La Marseillaise and the national motto: “liberty, equality, and fraternity.” On Bastille Day, the French set off fireworks, organize parades, and share food.

What will happen in Saint Paul for Bastille Day?

On Sunday, July 15, from noon to 6 pm, Alliance Française and Meritage Restaurant will host an outdoor Bastille Day celebration. Landmark Plaza in downtown St Paul will be transformed through live performances and family-friendly activities!

Main stage performances feature the Francine Roche trio, the Jack Brass Band, and Fatayu Sawibu. Grassy knoll events include a wine lesson from Meritage, djembe and dance from Ghana M’Baye and dancing by Afoutayi. MCs Ibou Wone and Steve LeBeau will introduce the main stage acts.

Kids can enjoy the bouncy castle, face painting, and games. Adults can check out our French-speaking Bazaar, picnic fare by Meritage, and meet Marie-Antoinette!
