Press release: Concert baroque

Enrich your knowledge of classical French music with our concert baroque!

Minneapolis (October 12, 2018) Alliance Française Mpls/St Paul is proud to host a Baroque concert on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 7 pm, at the Alliance located at 113 N First Street. The concert will be performed by some of the region’s most talented musicians: Sarah Jackson, soprano, and Thomas Walker Jr., lutenist.

“A lot of people enjoy classical music. We are delighted to add a Baroque concert to our rich program,” says Christina Selander Bouzouina, Executive Director. “The Alliance is particularly excited to present a mesmerizing show of classical music, as an opportunity to promote French culture.”

Through this event, Alliance Française Mpls/St Paul continues to honor France’s rich heritage and build bridges between French and American culture.

Above all, the concert baroque presents an opportunity to enjoy enchanting airs de court and lute solos as they would have sounded in King Louis XIII’s court.

“I couldn’t be more excited to present this spellbinding concert to Twin Cities music lovers and Francophiles. We invite all to join us in celebrating the timeless music of the Baroque era. Attendees will be captivated by the sweet notes of Thomas Walker Jr.’s lute and Sarah Jackson’s melodic voice,” mentions Bryn Vaaler, chair, AFMSP Board of Directors.

Tickets are $15 for AFSMP members and $25 for the general public. They can be purchased over the phone at 612 332 0436 or online.

About the Artists

Soprano Sarah Jackson, a Twin Cities native and lifelong Europhile, developed her deep love of French language, arts, and culture as a child. After discovering the music of Debussy, Fauré, and Rameau, as well as the poetry of Verlaine, Sarah spent years obsessing over French Baroque music before her first opportunity to perform airs de cour with Thomas Walker appeared. Performing and expanding this repertoire with Tom has been a top priority ever since.

Sarah is a graduate of St. Catherine University, holding a degree in Voice Performance. Following the completion of her degree, she studied with master teacher Elizabeth Mannion in St. Paul, who encouraged her to sing more French music.

Thomas Walker Jr. started classical guitar lessons at age 10. Not long after, he became interested in the 12-string guitar stylings of Leo Kottke and spent much of the next decade playing and composing in that style. Realizing that Leo was and is sui generis, he returned to classical music in college, studying both classical guitar and music theory.

Theory classes provided his first introduction to the music vocabulary of counterpoint. After college, he studied jazz guitar independently, but was increasingly captivated by early music, particularly polyphony. He bought his first lute in 1992 and began studies with Phillip Rukavina shortly after. Since then, Thomas has performed with Phillip, Ensemble Polaris, Consortium Carissimi, the Rose Ensemble, Sprezzatura, and the Venere Lute Quartet, as well as with lutenists Paul Berget and Edward Martin.
