French Dakota Roots in Southeast MN: Our Mixed-Blood Beginnings

The Mississippi River has long been a point of confluence of diverse peoples and cultures. Join historians for a presentation in English on the French-Indian Roots of Southeastern Minnesota.

(Minneapolis, MN) The Alliance Française and French-American Heritage Foundation of Minnesota are delighted to welcome Jane Peck and Mary Elise Antoine for a presentation on their research into the extensive French-Dakota presence along the Mississippi River from St Paul, Minnesota to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Jane and Mary are recent contributors to the Minnesota Historical Society online encyclopedia, Mnopedia.

Mary Elise Antoine is originally from Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. She has a master’s in History Museum Studies and has worked at historic sites in Wisconsin and Upstate New York. She serves as president of the Prairie du Chien Historical Society. Mary has published many articles and several books on the history of the upper Mississippi. Jane Peck is a historical playwright, writer, educator, choreographer and dance historian. She lived and worked in the Twin Cities for 30 years before moving to Lanesboro in Southeastern Minnesota. She has written and directed French and Métis-themed historical scripts for her dance group over the past three decades. She now writes for History Alive! Lanesboro and other area museums in addition to serving as an adjunct at several Minnesota colleges.
