Press Release: Writer Kim Thúy at the Alliance Française

Renowned Vietnamese-Québécoise Writer to Sign and Read from Books

Join Kim Thúy at the Alliance Française Minneapolis-Saint Paul on Tuesday, March 6th for a reading and signing of her books, Ru and Vi. We are excited to feature Vietnam as we celebrate 2018’s international month of la Francophonie. Thúy will read select passages, speak about her work, and answer questions from the audience in French and in English.

Thúy’s family left Vietnam when she was 10 years old, fleeing the communist regime. After a stay in a refugee camp in Malaysia, they arrived in Granby in the Eastern Townships of Québec. Adapting to the climate, language, and culture of their new home was challenging, but eased by the friendly welcome of their neighbors. After working on farms, as a seamstress, cashier and cook, Thúy pursued degrees in linguistics, translation, and law. At the same time, she opened a restaurant in Montréal to bring the cuisine of her native country to the city. When the restaurant closed, she began to write.

Thuy’s writing has been praised as “exquisite and lyrical, gentle and passionate.” The Toronto Star called her novel Ru “a delicate and vital love story… writing that is both heartbreaking and insistent.” She is a recipient of the Molson Prize in the Arts, the prestigious Governor General’s Literary Award and a chevalier of the Ordre national du Québec. You can purchase copies of her books at the AFMSP French Corner Bookstore. Admission: $10 for AF members and $20 for general public!
