Join Alliance Française Mpls/St Paul this March in a Celebration of Senegal as part of our annual Mois de la Francophonie (Francophone Month)
Each March, more than 33 million people around the world celebrate le Mois de la Francophonie, a global initiative led by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie to highlight the diversity of French-speaking cultures. This year AFMSP will be will be showcasing Senegal’s rich, historical, and cultural diversity through a range of events over the course of March.
The opening ceremony ‘Ndajé Téranga’’ commences Saturday, March 4, at Alliance Française Mpls/St Paul. The ceremony will feature a historical and cultural overview of Senegal, a fashion show, hair braiding and a Senegalese dance session.
As part of the month-long celebration, there will be a special appearance from SénéQueb rapper and artist Webster, who will be performing March 23 at Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. The artist will also be hosting a writing workshop at AFMSP on Saturday, March 25.
Other events include Senegalese pottery with Adama Sow, creator of ceramics company CeramicSow, on March 11; a Wolof class along with Senegalese tea on Saturday, March 18; and Soirée Djembés, a live drum performance with Senegalese percussionist Ghana Mbaye. Le Mois de la Francophonie will close out with a round table discussion on the role of Senegalese women in Senegal and in the USA.
Admission for the opening celebration is $15 for AF members, $20 for the general public and $10 for children under the age of 14.
