Wine Club: Vins d’Alsace tasting with Megan Larsen

On Wednesday, April 24, Alliance Française will partner with Megan Larsen, wine director of Young Joni, for a wine lesson and tasting about the wines of the Alsace region.

Megan’s interest in wine was first sparked when she studied abroad in Besançon, France, a city located slightly south and west of the Alsace region. While there, she had her first experience critically tasting wines when she attended an event at the university she attended. Megan began to seriously study wines a few years later, while working in fine dining. She is now the wine director of Young Joni, an award-winning restaurant located in Northeast Minneapolis.

Having spent much time in France, Megan cites her love of the culture of wine in France as inspiration for her profession now. France’s heritage is seeped with wine, making it a part of every-day life. With this in mind, Megan intentionally speaks and teaches about wine in an accessible way. It is her goal that wine may be enjoyed by all.

For this event, Megan will specifically guide us through the Alsace region, a very unique region of France, both in the world of wine and culturally. Alsace is one of the driest wine regions in France, as well as being very sunny and very far north. It is known first and foremost for its white wines; ninety-percent of the grapes grown in Alsace are white. Oftentimes in the world of wine, white wines are overlooked in preference of red wines, a grave mistake when approaching Alsace wines, whose best wines are white.
