Festinema Junior: Youth Film Festival

Join us for Festinema Junior 2024! Young learners will get the chance to practice their French comprehension while developing a taste for foreign-language cinema. This year, three films will be shown over three days. There is something for everyone to enjoy!

what is festinema?

Festinema is a French film festival for children and teens that will feature three animated films at the Main Cinema, located at 115 SE Main Street, Minneapolis 55414.

The goal of this festival is for students of the Twin Cities to discover the Francophone world and enjoy pertinent insight into French-language cinema and culture. This festival allows students from all backgrounds to enjoy a movie in a foreign language at the theater.

Each film will be shown in French with English subtitles.

Each day will offer a different film catered to a different age level.

 

May 1 : 10-12, May 2 10-12, May 3rd 9:30-11:30

 

MAY 1 - Elementary School

Belle et Sébastien: Nouvelle Génération,  film adaptation de l'œuvre de Cécile Aubry, réalisé par Pierre Coré en 2022 (96 min). 10 am to 12 pm

10-year-old Sebastien reluctantly spends his vacation in the mountains with his grandmother and aunt. He is to help them with the sheep, hardly an exciting prospect for a city boy like him... but that is without considering his encounter with Belle, a huge dog mistreated by her owner. Ready to do anything to fight injustice and to protect his new-found friend, Sébastien will spend the craziest summer of his life.

MAY 2 - Middle School

Interdit aux chiens et aux italiens, film d’animation en stop-motion sorti en 2021, réalisé par Alain Ughetto (70 min).  10 am to 12 pm

Early 20th century, Northern Italy. The Ughetto family, living through difficult times, dreams of a better future abroad. The story tells of Luigi Ughetto crossing the Alps to start a new life in France, thus changing the destiny of his beloved family forever. His grandson travels back in time revisiting their history, in an intimate dialogue with his grandmother Cesira.

MAY 3 - High School

Animal, film réalisé par Cyril Dion et sorti en 2021 (105 min ). 9:30 to 11:30

The place of mankind among the living is the main topic. At the instigation of Cyril Dion, who already gave us his vision with Tomorrow, and the primatologist Jane Goodall, two teenagers will embark in an extraordinary quest: to find another way of living alongside other species, more as roomates than predators. To do so, they will travel and meet with scientists and activists all over the globe.

Cost to participate is $3 per student, more information to follow. Transportation is not provided by the Alliance Française of Mpls/St Paul.
