Carnets de voyage
Exposition de croquis
Join us for a group expo featuring sketches by artists who have traveled to France and around the world!
According to Pascale Argod, travel diary specialist, "le carnet de voyage” is the visual and literary story of an exploration, which oscillates between graphic art, journalism, human sciences and poetry.
A sketch (un croquis) is a drawing made quickly, freehand, without looking for details in order to identify in broad strokes, the essence of the subject, the motif; often made from nature.
On view will be various sketches both large and small showing iconic and quotidian views of France and other countries. A carnet de voyage is a French tradition of creating an illustrated travel journal using mediums such as watercolor and pen and ink. During this opening night, the artists will have their journals on view! Don’t miss this opportunity to see these beautiful sketches!
Stay tuned to learn more about all the artists who will be exhibiting their artworks.
Julie Baugnet is currently an active collective member at Minnesota Center for Book Arts. She has exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally. She is an avid traveler, and has participated in residencies in France at La Muse in Languedoc, and at Le Parc, in Pampelonne.
Kathy Fenske is a traveler and sketch artist. Her love of speaking French has lead her to several cities in France including Paris, Versailles, Tours, Aix-en-Provence, Quiberon and Nice. Other destinations include Quebec City and Montreal, Canada and several cities in Morocco. Kathy is an active member of Urban Sketchers Twin Cities, a local chapter of a global organization which sketches on location during monthly meet ups.
Rockie Weymouth has studied French and visited France for decades, but only in the most recent one has she taken along her pen and paints. Although Rockie’s first love is studio watercolor painting, she has discovered the simple pleasure of tossing a pen, small paint palette and sketchbook into her suitcase, using it to capture the beauty, culture and people of France. She has sketched on hiking trips in the Cévennes, stays in Béziers, Toulouse and Lyon, and on trains in between!
Meg Arnosti discovered the Carnet de Voyage approach on her first trip to France in 2019, where she studied with sketch artist Catherine Moulle in Aix en Provence. There, she learned to sketch everyday scenes, trying to capture the “spirit of place” without worrying too much about being perfect. When she travels, she carries her sketchbook and small watercolor set with her. She sketches one small scene, then adds another and another, creating a collage of travel experiences. She learned from her French teachers to include writing from menus, historical signs, personal reflections, bus tickets, restaurant receipts, plants and other found objects.
After the opening night on October 26 at 6 pm, the exhibition will be open to visitors Monday through Thursday 9 am to 7 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays 9 am to 4 pm. The exhibition will be on display until November 25, 2023.
