STILL - Exhibition by Mary Jo Hoffman

Join us for the "STILL" exhibition, showcasing Mary Jo Hoffman's STILL project, which reflects her profound admiration for nature's subtle, seasonal expressions.

Her photography encourages viewers to pause and contemplate one thing at a time, to be still, if only for a moment, in a world of distracted hurrying from one thing to another.

The project is an endorsement of the power of dailiness, and an invitation to re-see the too-often overlooked "infraordinary," that surrounds us--those sights, sounds, and subtle changes that we think of as common and familiar, but which can come alive with delightful possibility when paid attention to.

Still in france

In fall 2012, Hoffman's family spent an extended academic semester in Autignac, a minuscule winemaking village in the Languedoc region of southern France. Her routine didn't change, but her subjects did, as she set about foraging, arranging, documenting, and collecting the iconic shapes and textures of the Mediterranean: fig leaves like giant hands, the delicate silver-gray of olive leaves, the yellow umbels and lacy fronds of wild fennel, and the perfection of a ripe cluster of wine grapes. Hoffman's photography encourages viewers to pause and contemplate one thing at a time, to be still, if only for a moment, in a world of distracted hurrying. Through her work, Hoffman discovered that every place on earth had this kind of depth available to anyone who stopped long enough to open up a conversation with it.

ABOUT MARY JO HOFFMAN

Mary Jo Hoffman is an artist and photographer, renowned for her unique and personal engagement with the natural world around her, primarily in North America's Great Lakes bioregion and the iconic scrubland of Mediterranean France. Best known for her multi-year, ongoing project, "STILL," she captures and posts one photo every day, on a white background, of a natural object found near her, whether leaves, flowers, seedpods, twigs, insects, or animals.

Her art can be found in her book "STILL: The Art of Noticing," published in 2024. This book shares a selection of the breathtaking photographs from Hoffman’s enormous archive, accompanied by perceptive, deeply felt, and oftentimes humorous essays illuminating the insights gained through this daily creative practice.
