- Gregg Rutter
Gregg Rutter has been interested in photography his whole life. His first camera was a Kodak Instamatic and, as a teenager, he began using his father’s 35mm Pentax camera. In high school he had a goal of photographing all of Frank Lloyd Wright’s buildings in Minnesota. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a BA degree in Architecture, he traveled to France and Italy with his 35mm Canon camera in hand to photograph the architecture and street scenes of Paris, Florence, Siena, and Rome.
Gregg has been inspired by the photography of Ansel Adams, Robert Frank, Vivian Maier, Imogen Cunningham, Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and others. He studied poetry with Allen Ginsberg, who was also a photographer. Photography and poetry are artforms that each share ways of seeing and documenting the world. Allen Ginsberg said, “the poignancy of a photograph comes from looking back to a fleeting moment in a floating world.”
So much has changed in the world of photography as technology has put a camera in everyone’s pocket these days. Gregg used to roll his own film and develop his photos in a makeshift-darkroom in his bathroom; now he uses digital mirrorless cameras and develops his images using computer software. But the intention and art remain the same: light and composition support the story of the image, the ‘poignancy of a fleeting moment in a floating world.’
More than anything, Gregg is a curious and imaginative artist, seeking to capture an essence of place and emotion with light and composition. He continues to explore his creative expression through photography, letterpress printing, painting, and writing.
After the opening night on Thursday, January 11 at 6 pm, the exhibition will be open to visitors Monday through Thursday 9 am to 7 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays 9 am to 4 pm.
