Haiti: Finding a way forward

Join the Alliance Française and several notable speakers for a discussion on the history of Haïti and country's challenges and legacy today.

Accompanied by notable professors and community members with great knowledge and passion for Haïtian history and culture, the Alliance Française will spend an evening exploring the past, present, and future of the country of Haïti. Speakers will provide an introduction to the country, a history of its colonization by France and struggle for independence, the Reign of Terror, up to the modern day challenges the country faces and visions for the future. 

The event will be online, via zoom.
All registered participants will receive the zoom link a few hours before the event.

Panelists

Professor Joelle Vitiello

Joëlle Vitiello is Professor and Chair of French and Francophone Studies at Macalester College in Saint Paul, MN. She specializes in representations of relationships in contemporary literature, especially by women from France and the Francophone world. Her current research focuses on Haitian literature and culture; Representations of Immigration; North African Cinema and literature, and representations of systemic violence. 

Dr. Reynold Verret

Dr. Reynold Verret is the sixth president and second lay leader of Xavier University of Louisiana. A Haitian native, Dr. Verret received his undergraduate degree cum laude in biochemistry from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Beyond his degrees, he has postdoctoral experiences as a fellow at the Howard Hughes Institute for Immunology at Yale and the Center for Cancer Research at MIT where he completed research regarding immunology. 

Dr. Frederic Barau Dejean

Dr. Dejean is a Haitian doctor. In addition to his work in medicine, he is also a professor at l'Université d'État d'Haïti, as well as the director for the Centre d`Information et de Formation en Administration de la Santé (CIFAS/MSPP) in Port au Prince. Much of his work centers around contributing to the effective change of human resource management practices and the structuring of a continuing education system in the public health sector in Haiti.

He also contributed to the creation and operation of the Endoscopy Department of the Hospital of the State University of Haiti and presented research on “the staff recruitment processes within the MSPP: the need to do better to improve the services offered to the population”, and “the Challenges, Issues and Perspectives of Medical Practice in Haiti”.

Professor Audrey M. Dorélien

Audrey Dorélien is an assistant professor in the global policy and the social policy & policy analysis areas and an affiliate of the Minnesota Population Center. Her research agenda strives to elucidate how human population dynamics and behavior intersect with environmental conditions to affect health. Her current research focuses on the effects of early life exposures (i.e. disease/nutrition/climate) on health. Professor Dorélien has a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Biology from Swarthmore College, as well as a PhD in Public Affairs from Princeton University.
