L’Étranger: The Outsider’s Gaze
exhibition by melissa sisk
A Visual Reflection on observation and otherness in france
Embark on a visual odyssey of illustrations and screen prints inspired by Melissa’s summer in Toulouse and Southern France in 2023. These pieces offer diverse perspectives — capturing the outsider's view of France, inviting the viewers (you!) to reverse roles and become the outsider, and prompting reflection on the complexities of observing and being observed.
Whenever I capture a scene, I feel intensely alive, like I'm inhaling an expresso -- or three. I am filled with immense wonder and gratitude witnessing life at work. It is my goal to use my art to illustrate the delightful and intriguing and inspiring aspects of the simple but energetic lives that we all lead.
- Melissa Sisk
Born in Germany and raised around the United States, Melissa Sisk developed a unique perspective that profoundly influenced her independence and journey into the world of art. The constant exposure to varied cultures and environments cultivated a curiosity and appreciation for the intricate tapestry of human experiences. Her professional career as an artist has also been a colorful tapestry, which has included being a medical illustrator, art director and team manager, and higher-education instructor.
In 2019, Melissa discovered a passion for printmaking — specifically woodblock and screen printing. Blending tradition with a fresh perspective, she found solace in the language of ink and paper, creating prints that capture the beauty and complexity of life. As Melissa continues to evolve as a printmaker, she remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the medium as well as exploring the complex emotions and narratives surrounding contemporary existence. Melissa has shown in several exhibitions and art events, but this is her first solo show.
After the opening night on Thursday, April 4th at 6 pm, the exhibition will be open to visitors Monday through Thursday 9 am to 7 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays 9 am to 4 pm. The exhibition will be on display until May 4th, 2024.
