About the artist TOU HER
After his family fled Laos from the Pathet Laos, Tou was born in the Ban Vinai refugee camp in 1981. Four years later, his family immigrated to Wisconsin to begin their new life. Growing up, he was interested in cartoons and comic books and started to copy the works. Despite having no talent with drawing or painting, he continued to pursue his passion and in his senior year, he decided to take the plunge and attend art school. At the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, he received his bachelor’s of Fine Art in Illustration and tried to enter the video game industry.
After many setbacks and failures to reach his goals, he took a break from art and raised a family. During his break, he didn’t give up his art and continued to hone his skills. After many years, he finally decided to pursue a career as an independent artist. His new goals were to promote his Hmong culture through the arts. To recreate the stories he heard as a child for his children who were more American than Hmong.
In 2018, he started Studio Tou, to promote the Hmong culture through his art and storytelling. He works in both traditional and digital mediums to bring his art to life and focuses on reconnecting the new generation with the old. He has self published two books to share with the world. Diaspora tells the folklore and history of the Hmong and Perilous Journey collects Hmong stories of the escape from Laos after the Secret War.
Tou continues to create new art and stories from his home as a Hmong-Minnesotan.
