Under the Influence of French Painting - Exposition de William Bukowski
Come admire the beautiful artwork of William Bukowski in our Vaaler Galerie!
When asked to describe Under the Influence of French Painting, William shared,“When I started to think of myself as a painter, it was the one hundredth anniversary of Impressionism (1974) and so there were several major exhibitions in Chicago and St. Louis. These exhibitions had a big impact on me as an art student and inspired me to travel to New York and then Paris, and eventually Giverny, Aix-en-Provence and Sauve. My brushwork, palette and subject matter came directly from the French painters. I loved the early works of Pissarro, Monet and Corot and their work spoke directly to me wanting to become an artist. The French painters from Courbet to Bonnard and Matisse continue to inform and inspire my painting. Included in this exhibition are two paintings that were completed on location in France. One is from Aix-en-Provence called “Cezanne’s Mountain” and the other is an oil sketch done at Monet’s garden in Giverny. One of the great attributes of French painting is the joy of life that is expressed through their artwork and that same joy is what I aspire to express.’’
The exhibition will be open to visitors Monday through Thursday 9 am to 7 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays 9 am to 4 pm. The exhibition will be on display until April 30th, 2022. It is free of charge, with a $10 suggested donation to support our cultural programs.
